Introduction: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common condition affecting millions of women worldwide. Vitamin D has been implicated in muscle strength regulation and inflammation modulation, making it a potential factor in POP development. This study aimed to investigate the impact of vitamin D analog supplementation on levator muscle strength and vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression in individuals with uterine prolapse.
Methods: A total of 400 women aged 50 to 74 years were included in this case control study, divided into a test group with POP and a control group without POP. Various assessments, including gynecological examinations, blood sampling for vitamin D levels, and pelvic floor discomfort questionnaires, were conducted.
Results: The results revealed thatVitamin D deficiency was associated with pelvic floor damage in postmenopausal women. The study found that the test and control groups had a similar age distribution, strengthening the validity of the findings. Furthermore, multiparity was identified as a potential contributing factor to prolapse development, suggesting a relationship between the number of vaginal births and prolapse occurrence. Significant differences were observed in stress urinary incontinence and pelvic floor distress between the test and control groups.
Conclusion: This study highlights the potential role of vitamin D in pelvic organ prolapse and the importance of considering parity and background disorders in understanding its etiology. Further research is needed to explore the therapeutic potential of vitamin D supplementation and its effects on levator muscle strength and VDR expression in individuals with uterine prolapse.
