Background and Objective: Kidney stones are a common urological disease that can significantly affect the quality of life of patients. Factors such as age, gender, type, size, and location of the stone can influence the onset and severity of symptoms. The present study aimed to evaluate the quality of life of patients with kidney stones and its relationship with demographic and clinical characteristics among those receiving treatment at the Shahid Beheshti Medical Center in Hamedan, Iran.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on patients with kidney stones visiting the Shahid Beheshti Educational Medical Center in Hamedan, Iran, in 2024. Data collection tools included a demographic and clinical information form and the Wisconsin Kidney Stone Quality of Life Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 25). Descriptive statistics, such as Mean, Standard Deviation, percentage, and frequency were reported. Analytical tests, such as ANOVA and independent t-tests were used to analyze the collected data.
Results: A total of 187 patients with kidney stones participated in the study. The mean age of the patients was measured at 50.43 ± 8.35 years. Most patients (80.2%) reported having a moderate quality of life. A significant relationship was found between age and the scores of the dimensions, as well as the total score of the quality of life questionnaire (P<0.05). Additionally, a significant relationship was observed between the type of treatment and the score in the vitality dimension of the quality of life questionnaire (P<0.05).
Conclusion: This study showed that the quality of life of patients with kidney stones is affected by factors such as age and type of treatment. A significant correlation was found between older age and a decrease in quality of life. Furthermore, the type of treatment had an impact on the vitality dimension. Therefore, focusing on these factors can greatly improve patients' quality of life and enhance treatment methods.
